Adult & Teen Classes

Ballet from the Beginning
(90 minutes)

This 12-week series is designed for adults and teens who are new to ballet, as well as for those who have had ballet in the past and want a gentle reintroduction to the basics. Each class builds on the exercises learned the week before, providing students with a foundational knowledge of ballet vocabulary. The relaxed pace of these classes allows students to slowly build muscle strength and control, while improving their balance, posture and flexibility. At the end of the 12 weeks, students can graduate to Basic Ballet or take Ballet from the Beginning again.

Senior or Adult Ballet
from the Beginning
(90 minutes)

This 12-week series is designed for older adults who are new to ballet or are returning after a long break, and is taught at a slower pace with plenty of time for questions. Each class builds on exercises learned the week before, but more time is spent clarifying, refining, and repeating the movements, with greater emphasis on how to modify ballet exercises, when necessary, to meet a student’s individual needs. As students gain a foundational knowledge of ballet vocabulary, they build strength; improve their balance, posture and flexibility; and exercise their minds by coordinating arm and leg movements with the music.

Basic Ballet
(90 minutes)

Basic Ballet is our beginning class for adults and teens who know the basics from previous ballet experience or for those who have completed our Ballet from the Beginning series. The class covers all the essential barre exercises, as well as simple center exercises, to reinforce and strengthen students’ ballet technique. Questions are welcome and very much encouraged in this class. Before advancing to Intermediate Ballet, students must be able to perform the exercises learned in Basic Ballet safely and correctly, both at the barre and in the center.

Intermediate Ballet
(90 minutes)

Intermediate Ballet moves at a slightly faster pace than Basic Ballet, with more reliance on students’ existing knowledge of ballet exercises and terminology. In this class, barre and center combinations are faster, more complex and more challenging, with continued emphasis on proper body alignment and developing muscle strength and control.

Intermediate and
Advanced Ballet
(90 minutes)

At this level, students are expected to have basic ballet vocabulary memorized so that when they hear a term, such as plié, they automatically bend their knees. Classes focus on increasing stamina and refining technique through longer, more demanding combinations that include more relevé, multiple pirouettes, sustained balances, beats, and changes of direction. Emphasis is placed on increasing students’ musicality and ability to move to different rhythms, encouraging dancers to develop their creativity and match their movements to the feeling of the music. Pointe shoes are allowed with the instructor’s permission.

Mixed Level Ballet
(90 minutes)

Mixed Level Ballet is a straightforward ballet class for everyone from confident beginners through advanced dancers. Though it moves at a slightly faster pace than Basic Ballet, it is still suitable for students in that category, as exercises at the barre and in the center are given with modifications to fit the level of each student in class that day. This arrangement offers dancers the opportunity to try exercises above or below their usual level and observe other students doing the same thing. Mixed Level classes are typically held at less popular times of the day, which allows students to take a class appropriate for their level at a time that fits their schedule.

Pre-Pointe and Pointe

Pointe/Pre-Pointe may be taken only with instructor permission. This class is designed for students who are already on pointe, as well as for those who are not yet on pointe and want to develop the necessary muscle strength and control to get there. Readiness for pointe work is determined by the instructor, and is dependent on each student’s individual strength and physical development. The instructor will tell students when they are ready to go on pointe. In the case of teens, parents will be informed as well. To prepare for pointe, pre-pointe students are expected to do a few strengthening exercises outside of class, as assigned by the instructor. To maintain the requisite muscle strength and control necessary for pointe work, students who are already on pointe must take at least two additional ballet classes per week.
Please, do not buy a first pair of pointe shoes without Heidi's permission. Your feet can change as you prepare for pointe. A pair that fits you now might not fit when you are approved for pointe work. Plus, pointe shoes are expensive!

Stretch and Strengthen + Barre
(90 minutes)

This class is taught on the floor and at the barre. The goal of this class is to identify which muscles need strengthening, and which need increased flexibility to correct ballet technique problems. The exercises on the floor are designed to build core strength, improve extension, and strengthen turn-out. After each exercise students go to the barre to apply what they have learned. While the stretches and strengthening exercises performed in this class are designed to improve ballet technique, they are equally useful for other dance forms and for students who want to improve their muscle strength and flexibility in general. Each student receives individual attention during class and questions are always welcome and encouraged. This class sometimes involves working in pairs, but modifications can easily be made for students who don’t feel comfortable with that.

Basic Ballet Barre + Stretch
(85 minutes)

Yoga mat required.
This morning class begins with 40 minutes of stretching on the floor followed by a 45 minute “Basic Ballet” class barre. To be successful in this class students should already know how to do simple ballet barre exercises. It is beginner friendly, but some previous ballet experience is necessary. Bring a yoga mat or large towel for the stretch part of the class.

Children's Classes

Introduction to Ballet &
Ballet 1

Students learn feet positions, port de bras (graceful movement of the arms), and basic barre and center exercises done in first and second position. The goal of the class is to start each student’s dance education with a mixture of exercises requiring focus, as well as exercises that are fun and allow students to use their imagination.

Dress Code

At Dancing with Heidi, we encourage dancers to wear clothing that feels comfortable for movement, with a recommendation for smooth, form-fitting and solid-colored attire so instructors can clearly see alignment and muscle engagement during class. All dancewear should be clean and in good repair, and hair should be pulled back away from the face; students are also encouraged to ask the instructor if they have questions about specific requirements.

A Note for Students

While I do not require my students to wear classic ballet attire, you will get the most out of my classes if I can see how your body is moving. Form-fitting clothing allows me to assess your body alignment and provide more precise and detailed corrections.

Child Dress Code for All Classes

Dance clothes should be clean and in good repair.

Bottoms: Footed or convertible tights, or leggings worn with socks, in plain, solid colors only. Simple skirts are allowed, but must be worn with something that covers the legs underneath.

Tops: Plain, solid colored leotard or T-shirt tucked neatly into leggings.

Warmups: Solid colors only and not overly baggy, please.

Shoes: Ballet slippers with elastics sewn on.

Undergarments: If needed, sports bras, dance belts, compression shorts and other types of supportive wear are welcome.

Hair: Pulled back away from the face and tightly secured.

Adult Dresscode for All Classes

Dance clothes should be clean and in good repair.

Bottoms: Footed or convertible tights in solid colors only. Leggings/sweatpants are also allowed, with socks. Dancers are welcome to wear shorts or skirts over tights/leggings/sweatpants if they

wish.

Tops: Solid colored leotard or a comfortable top that allows movement and can be tucked into tights or leggings.

Warmups: Solid colors are preferred.

Shoes: Ballet slippers with elastics sewn on. If you need to wear a different kind of shoe, please let the instructor know prior to class.

Undergarments: Sports bras, dance belts, compression shorts and other types of supportive wear are welcome and encouraged for maximum comfort while moving.

Hair: Pulled back away from the face and tightly secured.

A Note for Pointe Students

You will need to wear convertible tights so that you can put your toe cushioning on before your pointe shoes. Tights with a back seam are ideal if you want the instructor to be able to give you more precise corrections. No baggy or loose bottoms of any kind from mid-thigh down. It is dangerous in pointe shoes, as you could easily slip.

What Our Students Say

Real experiences. Real transformations.

"When I first began taking classes with Heidi, I had no dance experience and physical limitations due to a chronic pain disorder. Heidi took these things into account to give me individualized feedback, and I have made so much progress in my ballet skills as well as seeing improvements to my overall health. Her classes are incredibly welcoming and inclusive to people of all ages, backgrounds and levels of ability"
